On 18 February 2025, BioGaia Philippines participated in the Dental Health Fair hosted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). The event, held at Camp Aguinaldo, Lapu‑Lapu Grandstand, Quezon City, welcomed physicians, dentists, soldiers, and support staff from across the AFP to explore the importance of oral health and its connection to overall well-being.
At our booth, BioGaia Philippines showcased BioGaia® Prodentis®, our oral health probiotic, and introduced its benefits to attendees from diverse AFP units. Visitors were able to learn how probiotics support oral microbiota balance and how Prodentis® fits into daily health routines—especially in environments where dental care may be limited.
We also provided free toothbrush giveaways to guests, which were well received and appreciated by AFP members. Many shared that they were eager to improve their own oral hygiene habits and share what they learned with family and colleagues.
Clinical Study on Naval Sailors
To highlight the scientific basis of Prodentis®, BioGaia shared a peer-reviewed clinical study conducted aboard a naval vessel. The study, published in the Journal of Periodontology, was led by Professor Ulrich Schlagenhauf at the University Hospital Würzburg in Germany.
In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial:
-
72 healthy sailors were enrolled during a 6-week sea mission
-
One group received L. reuteri Prodentis® lozenges (2 per day)
-
The other group received a placebo, with no active probiotic
-
No professional dental cleaning or oral hygiene instructions were provided
Key findings from the study included:
-
Significant reduction in gum bleeding (BOP)
-
Improvements in plaque index and pocket depth
-
Visible benefits by day 14, sustained through day 42
The sailors taking Prodentis® experienced measurable improvements in oral health even without regular dental care. These results demonstrate the potential value of probiotic supplementation for populations—such as military personnel—who may have limited access to dental services.
Several AFP physicians and staff expressed interest in this clinical evidence, noting how it could inform future preventive care programs within the armed forces.
BioGaia Philippines thanks the AFP for the opportunity to participate in this important initiative and looks forward to further collaborations that promote stronger oral health across Filipino communities.
Stay tuned for future events and scientific updates supporting healthier mouths—and healthier Filipinos.
